Black and white photo of man using e-cigaretteIn recent times, the use of e-cigarettes (called vaping) has seen a huge boom in popularity.  It is commonly believed that vaping is better than smoking traditional cigarettes, so there is no reason why people should not indulge. Nothing could be further from the truth! Vaping can harm your oral health and negatively impact your overall wellness. This blog post describes four ways in which it could adversely affect your smile.

Dry Mouth

Propylene glycol is commonly used in e-cigarettes. This compound is strongly associated with an increased risk of dry mouth.

While dry mouth might seem like nothing but an inconvenience, it is actually quite serious. If your mouth has inadequate amounts of saliva, it may be difficult for you to chew and swallow. You may also suffer from chronic bad breath and an increased risk of dental decay and gum disease.

Gum Disease

E-cigarettes tend to feature nicotine, which narrows the blood vessels and can reduce blood flow to the gums. This can greatly increase your risk of developing gum disease.

At first, gum disease is a mild condition. As it progresses, though, it can lead to devastating consequences. It is a leading cause of tooth loss. It is also associated with an increased risk of numerous systemic health problems, including heart attack, stroke, preterm birth, and dementia.

Tooth Discoloration

Traditional cigarettes have a widespread reputation for causing teeth to take on a yellow or brownish color. That happens because the cigarettes contain tar and nicotine. While vaping products do not have tar, they do contain nicotine. Therefore, they may cause your teeth to lose their natural radiance. You could end up feeling self-conscious about the way you look.

Changes in Your Oral Microbiome

A healthy mouth has a balance of good and bad bacteria. Unfortunately, vaping can upset that balance and even cause a four-fold increase in the number of harmful bacteria that can cling to your teeth. As a result, you may be at a heightened risk of cavities. You may even develop oral cancer!

Vaping is not a harmless way to relax — it could ruin your smile and negatively affect your overall health! Do your best to kick this harmful habit.
