Dental Bonding vs. Veneers — Which Should I Choose?

Beautiful smile with either veneers or bonding in East Hartford

Dental bonding and veneers have a few things in common. They can both transform the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth, and they both offer natural-looking results. But there are also quite a few differences between veneers and bonding. This blog post discusses some of those differences with the goal of helping you get an idea of which cosmetic treatment might be better for you.

Cost

Veneers in East Hartford cost significantly more than bonding. This is because veneers require a more complex and time-consuming treatment process, and they are made out of high-quality, dental-grade porcelain.

Expected Lifespan

While the lower price of dental bonding in East Hartford is certainly attractive, it is important that you also think about how long you want your results to last. It is difficult to predict the lifespan of bonding, but in general, it usually lasts for 5 years or so before it needs to be replaced. Veneers typically last much longer. It is common for them to endure for a minimum of 10 years.

Your Goals for Treatment

There are some types of dental damage in which either veneers or bonding may work well as a treatment. However, there are circumstances that might call for one above the other. For example, because bonding is less durable than veneers, it is usually recommended only for patients who want to change the look of one or two teeth. Veneers are more versatile and can be used as part of a total smile makeover.

Treatment Process

The dental bonding process is quite quick. In fact, it usually requires just one appointment and may take less than one hour.  Most patients do not even need anesthesia for it. Designing and placing veneers is more complex and requires at least two appointments. The appointments may take place a few weeks apart. Also, preparing teeth for veneers requires the removal of a bit of enamel, while bonding requires little to no tooth preparation.

Maintaining Your Results

Caring for veneers and bonding is similar in some ways; oral hygiene remains as important as ever. However, because bonding is less durable than veneers, it might require a few extra precautions. For example, it may stain over time, so you should consume dark foods and beverages in moderation. Veneers are nonporous and do not absorb pigments, so they are much less likely to become discolored.

Need Help Deciding?

Neither veneers nor bonding are necessarily the “better” treatment. However, one or the other might be better for you. Your cosmetic dentist will be happy to help you decide. After they learn about your circumstances and your oral health, they can recommend the best way to get the smile you have always wanted.
