Are you approaching the finish line of your orthodontic treatment? You may have been waiting many months to get your braces removed, and the day is finally near when you can see your results! Still, as excited as you might be, you could still have questions about what to expect during and after the braces removal process. This blog post explains some useful information.

Braces Removal Is Easy

Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how quick and smooth their braces removal appointment is. Since braces brackets are designed to pop off the teeth easily with the help of a special instrument, it may take very little time to remove your braces.

Once your brackets and wires are no longer in your mouth, any remaining bracket adhesive will be polished off your teeth, and your orthodontist or dentist will perform a final exam to make sure your results are satisfactory. They might also take photos and X-rays to document how your treatment turned out.

The First 48 Hours

You might experience some mild discomfort during the first couple of days after your braces get removed. Your teeth were under constant pressure for a long time, so taking that pressure away may lead to a temporary increase in teeth and gum sensitivity. Try to be gentle when you are brushing and flossing. If you notice swelling or inflammation, swishing with warm salt water can help to diminish it. If you experience severe pain, call your dental care team for guidance.

Maintaining Your Results

Even after your braces are no longer on your teeth, you will still need to do a bit of work to maintain your results. Your orthodontic team will provide a retainer, the purpose of which is to prevent your teeth from shifting into their previous positions. If you fail to use it as directed, you might accidentally undo your braces’ results!

At first, you may be instructed to wear your retainer for 20 – 22 hours each day, removing it only when you eat and clean your teeth. After a few months, you might need to wear it only at night. Eventually, you may need to use it just a few times each week. If it ever starts to feel uncomfortably tight, that could indicate that you are not wearing it enough.

Completion of your treatment with your braces is a good reason to be excited! Ask your orthodontic team if you have questions about how to care for your newly straightened smile.
